Can't get rid of a submodule

Hello-

I inadvertently created a submodule when I committed a folder that had an old .git folder within it.  Now this directory shows up as a submodule in bitbucket.  I have removed all extraneous .git info from this folder in my local build and ran git init in the directory, but these changes don't seem to be getting pushed up to my branch.  I can't find a .gitmodules file anywhere in the main directory.

I see the double folder icon next to this directory in bitbucket, when I click on the icon I see what I am guessing is the build info.

When I click on Edit, I see a page with this error:

"That link has no power here

Return to the previous page or go back to your dashboard."

When I try to delete this submodule, I see the error

"Something went wrong   Specified change not on head of branch master"

Committing this change will delete vce-content/components/dinodefender from your repository"

I'd love any advice on how to clean this up!  I would like this folder to just be a normal folder within my project.

Thanks!
