Can Stash perform a Jira transition that includes required fields or comments?

I know from Stash you can transition issues. One thing that is not clear, is how Stash handles issues that have field requirements for the transition. For example, to Re-Open an issue there is a Comment requirement. When I try to Re-Open in Stash, the comment field is not display and then the error I get is

The transition could not be completed due to an unexpected error. Use JIRA to execute this transition.

which I think is due to the field requirement. Is this assumption correct or is there possibly a configuration requirement that is missing?

You are correct, Stash can only perform "simple" transitions.
