Bitbucket profile settings has a field for Website. Where is this information used?

Apologies @v, I had misread your question earlier. The website field in Profile Settings is not currently used in the UI. It was displayed in earlier versions of Bitbucket and may be displayed again but is not currently part of the UI.

The website field is displayed on the repository overview details.

As an example, TortoiseHg (a public repo) has a link to their website under the repository details: https://bitbucket.org/tortoisehg/thg/overview

I don't see the overview details - your link redirects to https://bitbucket.org/tortoisehg/thg/src

... unless I use a different browser where I'm not logged in! Then the repository description also disappears from the source tab and moves to the overview.
