After successfully running the installer to upgrade from 5.0.1 to 7.17.0 we see the following message after starting up Bitbucket:

A fatal error has occurred

The following problem occurred, which prevents Atlassian Bitbucket from starting:

• The database, as currently configured, is not accessible.

I'm afraid that really does mean what it says - the connection you have configured for the database points to a database that it can't get into.

Check the bitbucket config file (bitbucket.properties under <bitbucket home>/shared) contains the right host, user, password and so-on, and that the connection settings can be used to connect something else to it (like a command line tool)

I was able to figure out the database connection issue.

The problem is in version 5.0.1 the jdbc driver was to be put in the <install directory>/lib.

In version 7.17.0 the jdbc driver needed to go into the <bitbucket home>/lib.

Once I copied the jdbc driver to the correct directory, The problem was solved.
