Access variables in pipelines on Windows runners

How can we access repo/deployment variables in pipelines scheduled to run on Windows runners?

Able to access environment variables as below.

script:
- echo "$env:BITBUCKET_BUILD_NUMBER"

Repo variables doesn't work the same way.

script:
- echo $username

script:
- echo "$username"

script:
- echo '$username'
