It seems the checkout from subversion in Bamboo 3.1.1 is much faster than it was in Bamboo 2.5, and that is good... but...

While that's good, I'm wondering why it's so much faster? Is there some functionality difference betwwen 2.5 and 3.1.1 that might have some unexpected side-effect I have to be aware of?

Is it possible to drop the newer svnkit library into Bamboo 2.5, or are the libraries not compatible??

Thanks.

Nothing to worry about - the performance improvement comes from upgrade of SVNkit (SVN handling library) from 1.3.0.5847 to 1.3.5.7539 - there's been quite a lot of improvements done between these two releases.
