Hi Atlassian Community!
I wanted to share something that’s made a real difference in how I work — using Jira Automation to handle repetitive tasks. Like many of us, I found myself spending too much time moving issues across boards, adding comments, tagging teammates, and following up on tasks. It worked, but it was time-consuming and easy to miss things.
I started exploring Jira’s built-in automation rules. Under Project Settings, I found the Automation section and decided to give it a try. My first rule was simple: when a new issue is created, automatically assign it to the reporter or a default assignee. That saved me a lot of time and made sure no task was ever left unassigned.
Next, I created a rule that sends a comment when the status of an issue changes to “In Review.” This automatically tags the relevant reviewers, keeping them in the loop without me having to manually ping them every time. Another favorite rule I set up closes issues that haven’t been updated in 30 days. It posts a polite comment, then transitions the issue to “Closed.” This keeps our backlog clean and active.
One thing I realized while working with these rules is the power of small improvements. Each automation might save just a few minutes, but together, they save me hours every week. And beyond saving time, they help keep our process consistent and reduce the risk of missing something important.
If you're a site admin, you can also create global rules that apply across multiple projects. But even at the project level, automation can bring a lot of value. Just remember to start simple, test thoroughly, and always check the audit log to see what actions were triggered. Also, be careful not to over-automate — it's still important to keep a human touch in areas where communication matters.
For me, Jira Automation has turned Jira from something I had to constantly babysit into a tool that works with me. It’s been a game-changer, and I really encourage others to explore it too.
I’d love to hear how others are using automation in Jira. What are some of your favorite rules or creative use cases?
Thanks for reading!
