Can you restrict viewership on Goals?

Hi! Are you able to set permissions to restrict who can view Goals? I see in the share menu you're only able to change to view and edit, but no making it visible to just yourself or to a select audience.2026-08-06_10-50-55.png

Hi @Nathan Matsushima

Yes, it's possible but only at creation time.

When you create a new goal, there's an Access option where you can choose between Open (default, visible to everyone with access to the Goals app) and Restricted (visible only to the people, teams, or groups you explicitly share it with).

A few important things to know:

  • You can only restrict a goal when you create it. You can't change an existing open goal to restricted, the option is disabled after creation.
  • Restricting a goal restricts everything under it, sub-goals, key results, and metrics all inherit the same access.
  • You can change a restricted goal to open, but it's a one-way change. Once open, you can't restrict it again.
  • Access changes apply to the entire hierarchy. If you give someone "Can edit" on a sub-goal, they get "Can edit" on the parent goal and everything else in the hierarchy too.
  • A red lock icon appears on the Share button so you can see at a glance that a goal is restricted.

To restrict a goal:

  1. Select Create → Goal
  2. Fill in the details
  3. In the Access menu, select Restricted
  4. Create the goal, then use the Share menu to add specific viewers and editors

Hey @Cristian Quiroz thanks for your reply. I took a look and don't see the Access Menu.. should I be looking somewhere else? Or is there a particular create Goal field that has the access menu?

Hey @Nathan Matsushima , thanks for checking!

You're right, I apologize for the confusion. After looking into this further, the Access menu at creation time and the "Access and permissions" tab in Goal settings are both part of a feature that is currently in early access and only available to select customers. It hasn't been rolled out to all instances yet.

So for now, on most instances, the only permission control available is:

  1. Open a goal after creating it
  2. Click the Share button (top-right)
  3. Under General access, set it to "Can view" (this limits editing to the owner/creator only)
  4. Under Specific access, add individual people or teams with "Can view" or "Can edit"

However, this only controls who can edit vs. view — it does not allow you to completely hide a goal from other users who have access to the Goals app.

Full goal-level restriction (making a goal invisible to others) is not yet available for all customers. According to Atlassian's documentation, it will be rolled out later this year.

Sorry for the initial misinformation
