Hey Community,
I’m Anika Rani, Principal Product Manager on the Atlassian Projects team and I’m excited to share an update on what we’ve delivered and what’s next.
Projects is your organization’s single source of truth for tracking and communicating the health and progress of every project. It brings together just the right details - what’s being worked on, why it matters, who’s responsible, and how things are going, so anyone can quickly understand the status of work across your company.
By providing high-level visibility into timelines, goals, and stakeholders in one unified place, Projects makes it easier for cross-functional teams to stay informed and aligned. With a focus on clear project ownership, progress tracking, and goal alignment, Projects supports both top-down planning and bottom-up execution, helping every team move work forward together.
Over the past year, we’ve focused on making Atlassian Projects more accessible and valuable for every customer.
All customers can now get access to Atlassian Projects at no cost. We’ve also introduced new access controls in Atlassian Administration, so admins can manage who has access to Projects independently from Goals, giving you more granular control over your organization’s experience.
We have aligned with broader Atlassian platform changes, including the upcoming renaming of Jira “Projects” to “Spaces”. This change is designed to make it easier to distinguish between Atlassian Projects, which helps teams communicate the big picture and progress of your work, while Jira Spaces gives teams the structure to get it done.
We’ve been focused on improving Goals, which work together with Projects to connect strategic intent with execution, through deeper integrations with Jira and Focus. These enhancements pave the way for similar improvements to Projects, ensuring both capabilities work seamlessly together across Atlassian apps.
Finally, we’ve enabled a top Community request, Drafts for Project Updates, which allows project contributors to collectively draft, save, and refine project status updates before publishing.
We’re excited to share that we will be evolving the Project's experience. Here’s what we’re focusing on next:
Preview panels: We’re launching new Projects preview panels in Jira and Confluence, allowing you to view and interact with Project details in-context, without leaving your workflow. This is part of a broader initiative to create a seamless, consistent experience across Atlassian apps.
Better connections across your workflow: We’re enhancing connections between Projects and the other apps you use, making it easier to link work, share updates and ensure information flows smoothly across teams.
Project navigation improvements: Soon, you’ll be able to find Projects in the App Switcher and customizable sidebar, mirroring the recent improvements we’ve made for Goals and other Atlassian apps. These changes will make Projects more accessible and include explorations to let you create Projects from wherever you’re already working.
Data residency: You can now “pin” your Projects and Goals data to the same region as your Jira or Confluence data. While data can be pinned, moving it between regions isn’t available yet. We’re actively working on enabling data moves in 2026. For now, your data will automatically reside in the same region as your Jira or Confluence data for most customers. Read more about data residency here.
Permissions and better access controls: Introducing more granular, flexible permissions so you can control who can view, edit, or manage projects at both the app and project level. We understand this is a top request from our enterprise customers, as it can significantly impact internal adoption.
We’re committed to making Projects the best place to manage and communicate work across your organization. Learn more about how to get started with Projects and Goals. We’d love to hear your feedback!
