Asset QR code printer

Hello Atlassian Community,

I see this question was asked by a few people back in 2023 but never got answers. So I'm going to take my turn to ask. 

Like those before me, my company is interested in printing these QR codes onto a label that we could place on our assets to allow for quick access to the asset details we track.

Do you have a printer/label size that you would recommend using for printing out Atlassian Assets QR codes? 

Or alternatively are there printers you would say to avoid?

Label size depends on what you want on the tag. If it is only the QR code, you can go quite small. If you also want other attributes such as asset name, key, serial number, location, owner, etc., then orientation matters: horizontal labels usually work better for a QR plus 1-3 short fields, while vertical layouts can fit longer names or stacked details. You’ll also want to decide between a roll label printer and label sheets. Manufacturer templates vary slightly, so expect some alignment testing. A common practical size is 6.7 cm x 2.3 cm.

Disclosure: I’m with Mobility Stream, and we work with Jira Assets customers on exactly this workflow. Native Assets QR printing is useful, but it gets limiting when you need bulk printing, custom fields, sheet layouts, or printer-friendly output.

For JSM Assets QR codes, I would focus less on a specific printer brand and more on print quality, label durability, and QR size.

A practical starting point would be:

Label size: around 30 × 30 mm or larger for the QR itself
Printer resolution: at least 300 dpi if possible
Label type: durable thermal-transfer labels if the assets are handled frequently or used in harsher environments
Contrast: black QR on a white background
Quiet zone: leave some white space around the QR so scanners can read it reliably

For office environments, a standard label printer from vendors such as Brother, Zebra, DYMO, or similar can work well, provided it prints at sufficient resolution.

For larger asset fleets or industrial use, I would lean toward a thermal-transfer printer, because the labels tend to last longer than direct-thermal labels.

I would avoid:

very small labels where the QR code becomes dense;
low-resolution printers;
glossy labels with strong reflections;
direct-thermal labels for assets exposed to heat, sunlight, or long-term use.

Before purchasing anything, I would print a small test batch with the actual QR codes generated by Assets and scan them using a few different phones. That will tell you very quickly whether the size and resolution are sufficient for your environment.

If you want to include additional information such as the asset name, serial number, or asset ID next to the QR code, I would probably move up to something like a 50 × 30 mm or 50 × 40 mm label.
