Dashboard with rich filter picking data from parent and child

I am hoping that this is possible.  I have a dashboard that starts with the Rich Filter Controller.  I want to show in a Rich Filter Filter Smart Counters gadget data that is only on the parent ticket AND data that is only on the child ticket.

On the Parent, I have a field called "Field A" (not the real name).  A value that could be in that field is "Complex".  On the child we have the person assigned and a due date field.  In the Rich Filter Controller if I pick "John Doe", my filter does not show the correct number (shows zero) in the Smart Counters gadget (it should show 1).  If I remove the name "john Doe" the correct data shows up.

Is this possible to do?
