Inline comments work well when reviewing a single page, but they become difficult to manage as Confluence content grows.
On a long or busy page, users may need to scan the entire page for highlighted text just to determine whether unresolved discussions remain. A small highlight can also contain several replies, so an important discussion may not be obvious until someone opens it.
The problem becomes larger when comments are distributed across dozens of pages or multiple spaces. Notifications and manually checking every page do not provide a reliable overview, while comments made on images, videos and other attachments can be particularly easy to miss.
CommentLens provides three ways to make these discussions easier to find and manage.
The page byline shows the number of unresolved inline comments on the current page.
This gives users an immediate indication that open discussions remain without requiring them to search the page for highlighted content. Space administrators can enable or disable the byline for each space.
The Inline comments (CommentLens) macro displays comments from selected Confluence content in a configurable table.
Instead of opening every page individually, teams can maintain a combined view showing the commented content, discussion, author, page, space, labels, creation date and status. Comments made on files and attachments are included alongside comments on page text.
The macro can be placed on a documentation review, content-maintenance or team coordination page, providing a reusable overview of discussions that still require attention.
The Search inline comments action provides an on-demand view when a permanent macro is not required.
Search results show the commented content, original comment, replies, author, page location, labels and status. Users can open the relevant page or comment directly from the results.
Completed searches can also be exported as CSV files.
This is useful for broader investigations, finding feedback from a particular person, reviewing discussions containing specific words or exporting results for further analysis.
Both the macro and Search can work with different content scopes.
Comments can be collected from the current page, selected pages, selected pages with their child pages, or selected spaces. This allows teams to review a small group of related pages or search more broadly across Confluence.
For larger scopes, comments can be filtered by:
Creation date
Page labels
Comment author
Mentioned users
Words contained in comments
Resolution status
Filters can optionally inspect replies as well as the original comment. Results can also be sorted and displayed using a configurable page size.
Use the page byline to see immediately whether a page has unresolved comments.
Use the macro to maintain a reusable overview across selected content.
Use the search action to investigate comments across a broader scope or export the results.
