How to Access Past Confluence Page Versions & Avoid Broken Attachment Links in Page History

Have you ever needed to access Confluence page history to a specific date for an audit, a past release, or compliance? If so, you've probably noticed that native Confluence is built for fast-paced daily collaboration, not strict version control.

Relying on the native "Restore this version" feature to reconstruct a past milestone across your space can lead to a few major setbacks:

Page-by-Page Isolation: There is no single button to roll back an entire space. You have to manually open each page, dig through its history, and restore it individually.

Unpublished Draft Data Loss: When you use the native "Restore this version" feature, it overwrites the active page. More importantly, deleting a draft or unpublished changes is permanent and cannot be restored. Restoring an old version destroys any pending drafts, which disrupts your team's current work and can cause the loss of valuable documentation.

The Attachment Versioning Issue (CONFCLOUD-2533): If you restore a historical page version, Confluence renders the old text, but its current behavior is to display the latest version of any attached images or diagrams. This breaks document traceability and is a huge red flag for compliance audits.

How to Safely Rebuild the Past

Before trusting an app with your compliance data, it’s important to know who built it. Baselines for Confluence is developed by OBSS, an Atlassian Gold Marketplace Partner with over 15 years of experience. OBSS is an ISO 27001 certified vendor, and the app is Cloud Fortified and actively participates in the Marketplace Bug Bounty Program.

Instead of overwriting your active pages, Baselines acts as a virtual time machine. It captures a read-only, immutable snapshot of your entire space at a specific moment, without destroying active drafts.

Baselines gives you two simple ways to create these snapshots:

Based on a Date: Simply pick a past date. The app automatically bundles the latest version of every document, blog post, and attachment that was available right before that timestamp.

By Selecting Individual Item Versions: Need granular control? You can manually select specific versions of individual pages and attachments to build your official record.

How to View, Compare, and Export Baselines

Once saved, your baseline becomes a secure, permanent milestone ready for any audit:

Browse History: Open a baseline from the app menu to see a full list of your past pages, blogs, and attachments. You can easily check the version and date of each item, or click a title to jump right to that old document.

Spot the Differences: Compare any two baselines (like "v1.0" vs "v2.0") side-by-side. The app instantly highlights exactly what was Added, Removed, or Changed.

Export for Audits:
Download specific pages or your entire baseline as a PDF or CSV file to share with compliance and audit officers.

By separating daily edits from frozen milestones, your team can keep working while you keep the organization audit-ready. Want to learn more? Check out Baselines for Confluence on the Atlassian Marketplace.
