What are the "dots" on the issue cards in a sprint?

I'm very new using JIRA.  What are the "dots" that are at the bottom of the issues that are in a sprint?  They differ in the number of dots.

I think Thomas is trying to encourage more search before requesting help, which involves more parties to do the work.

hover over it and you will see the number of days this issue has been in the status.
