Welcome Wednesday: Working outside?

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

Today it's the Summer Solstice up here in the Northern Hemisphere, and the weather has been beautiful outside. This week is dedicated to my fellow remote working friends.

Back when I was working in an office full time, I would regularly look out the window on nice summer days longing to be out there enjoying the weather. Now that I’m working 100% remotely from home, there are a number of days I will decide to take my laptop and work outside on my patio.

My question for you all this week: If you are in a position to be able to work outside, do you take advantage of it? Or do you prefer to work at your desk at all times when you are working?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Have a great rest of the week!

If the beach had the Wi-Fi and I could move my inside office outside...AND I wasn't afraid of dropping my computer in the sand, I would be working on the beach!  Counting wave algorithm's :-).

Well, now that I have moved to the Middle East, it is 100F with heat index of 122F today. (38C and 50C). And though I am completely free to sit outside if I like, I am happily sitting inside with the air conditioning.  :-)

@Jimmy Seddon great prompt! My wife and I always say that when we started spraying for mosquitos and got an umbrella for our porch we reclaimed unused square footage from our home. I work from home on Fridays. In the winter months I start the day at a local coffee shop with good WiFi where I generally put in 2-2.5 hours of work and two cups of coffee before heading back home to my home office. In the Spring-Summer-early Autumn months though I set myself up on the porch. With the umbrella I can stay outside almost all day. I have a 100ft ethernet cable that I throw out of the window so I can be on a wired connection with better speeds than my WiFi. I'm usually parked there with an iced coffee and even take Zoom meetings from that position. My neighbors always start up quick conversations as they walk by and  get a kick out of my remote-remote office.

It's a bit of a mess right now due to a Father's Day cookout (and well, ....kids), but over the past year, we've really beefed up our outdoor space. I love working out there and the pergola is what makes it the most useful space - with too much sun, you can't even see your screen! 😎 When we first added the patio, our wifi didn't do a great job. Thankfully, my husband rectified that. 😅

I will say that I miss having multiple monitors when I go outside, but I like to take meetings out there or do other tasks that just get me away from my desk. I am fortunate to work in a very bright and sunny space with lots of windows all the time though!

I could definitely work from the terrace and garden (if I had them) or from the paradise beach ;)

It's too hot outside, especially in the sun 🙈 I rather work inside and then I rest outside 😊

I enjoy stabilized temperature, and i also don't have a great wi-fi connection, cable always seems a lot better to me!

So i would just work from the inside home :)

Have not yet had a chance to spray the patio from the spider webs that popped up over fall/winter due to a rainy start to spring. But definitely will take the opportunity to work outside once I do.

Whenever the weather is beautiful, I grab my laptop, head out to my garden, find shade under the pergola (or even lay on a hammock), and let the melodies of nature and the gentle breeze accompany me while I work. It's a delightful experience that boosts my productivity and brings a sense of joy to my day.

Nice topic, @Jimmy Seddon !

Personally, I like to work in a distraction-free and noise-free space where I can focus more on my tasks at hand for better productivity. I have no issues with my Wi-Fi signal or weather. So, I prefer to work indoor at my desk rather than outdoor in my patio/balcony.

But that might change in a year or so based on my first experience of the extreme winter season in Alberta where I have moved recently. Maybe, I would not like that and start working outside in the short summer season we have in Alberta.

Have a great Wednesday and the rest of the week everyone!

I'm in Florida with high humidity and temperatures so I can't work outside without becoming soup, but I love looking outside my window throughout the day.  :)

Same in Tennessee @Ditte Simard! But today is surprisingly mild over here, and I have a feeling it might be the last tolerable day until fall. So I'm taking my morning meetings outside in my backyard! Thanks for the inspiration @Jimmy Seddon

My yard runs into a forested area and I was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of deer loitering back here. Great way to start the day. :)

If the Wifi is fast enough, or you have a long enough network cable, GO FOR IT!  It's like that post in the TeamWork Lab Group about taking a meeting outside.  If it doesn't affect your work, and outside noise isn't going to mess with your conference calls, out you go.

Now being in MN, working outside from November to March would be an interesting challenge, and I certainly wouldn't want my PC to freeze up... :)

@tsmith My husband and I bought 2.6 acres of land in TN earlier this year!  I have heard that TN is called the "armpit of the South" but that it is still more seasonable than Florida!  :P

@Ditte Simard LOL!!

I have also been known to describe the days of very bad humidity like standing in a giant mouth. Luckily it doesn't smell like either.

We're definitely seasonable over here - sometimes you don't know which season you'll get from week to week!

Although I (currently) don't have a place to sit outside in the apartment I'm renting, we have a balcony at the office. Whenever I'm just tired of sitting at the desk, I take my laptop outside and enjoy the fresh air while reading and/or replying to emails 😎

And when I need a break from it all, I also bring some cold BEvERage of choice with me 😁

Absolutely! I live on a lake with a beach. During summer will take my laptop, use my phone as a hotspot, and sit with my feet in the water! I get a little surge of energy from the appreciation I feel for being able to do it and end up getting more work done on those days!

Working outside is a fantastic experience, if you've got the right set up. Battling battery life, screen glare, and sunscreen are always a valiant effort.

I love being outside, but not to work. I find that I get distracted very easily by nature and I really need my 3 monitors to do my job, so for me it's all at my desk! I do have a nice window I can look out of though.

I just stumbled upon this thread while working in our garden, in the shade of an old apple tree, watching my kids play in a kiddie pool.

I love working outside in our garden or on our terrace when possible, it helps me to get re-energized and focused.
