Welcome Wednesday: Transportation for Leisure?

Happy Wednesday Everyone!

This past weekend, my wife and I took the kids on a Christmas train ride. My youngest is fascinated by trains right now so we thought it for be a fun weekend activity. We got to see many fun sights and Santa was even on the train wishing everyone a Merry Christmas.

This got me thinking, how many of you have gone on a dinner cruise, or a helicopter ride or something else of that nature? If you have I'd love to hear all about it. If you haven’t I'd love to know if there is anything like that you would like to experience in the future. Let me know in the comments below.

Have a great rest of the week!

Looks and sounds like you had a fun time :-)

Helicopter ride is pretty high up on my bucket list - friend and I tried to book one a couple of months ago but they were fully booked - fingers crossed we'll get a chance sometime next year...

First, I love how your wife and kids are all bundled up but your just sporting a short sleeved hoodie! #CanadianStrong

Over the years we have taken a few of the NYC Circle Line cruises around Manhattan Island. There is no destination, usually just a nice late summer afternoon cruise around NYC as the sun sets. Sometimes these have been booze cruises where cocktails, wine and beer are served.

When the kids were younger we would always look for some railroad experience while on summer vacation - and have covered trips in Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania, Cog Railway New Hampshire and Conway Railway New Hampshire. I don't think I'll ever outgrow the nostalgia and romance of a train trip. I'm sure that's part of the reason I commute daily via train - even if that is not particularly for leisure.

Great pictures, Jimmy!  Looks like you all had a good time!

I've had the opportunity to do both a cruise & a helicopter ride!

The cruise was billed as a 'cruise to nowhere'. We left out of New York, went out until we could see no land on all sides, dropped anchor, and spent a weekend doing all the fun things a 'normal' cruise does except for stopping at destination ports.  We even had the pleasure of dining with the captain one night!

When my son was about 8 years old we took him on a helicopter ride over the Ozarks (in Missouri).  He was scared and almost didn't go, but the pilot was great with him, let him wear a headset and talked to him about all the sites below the whole time!  It was a great experience for all of us and was made even more special seeing it all through the eyes of a child for their very 1st time!

@Andy Gladstone I was born & raised in Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania!! The train rides in Jim Thorpe are especially beautiful during the fall. A lot of beautiful countryside in the Lehigh Valley!

In 2003, I had the chance to fly a Cessna 152 (PH-SCX) from the Teuge (EHTE) airport.

It was quite the experience. I prefer 4 wheels though.

Great question!

I've done a night train with a sleeper car to Austria for a holiday when I was in my early 20's.
The family has done a sleeper train from Ayutthaya to Chang Mai when we were on a holiday in Thailand (the kids loved it :) )

I've done summer camps where you bike during the day but sleep on a boat during the night (being gently rocked to sleep was awesome).

And I've flown a helicopter once but totally didn't enjoy the ride as I was strapped down on a gurney after having shattered my shoulder during skiing. I still want to do it again one day (without the injury preferably).

A ride in a hot air balloon is also still high on my list, and maybe either a BoardGame Cruise or a 70.000 Tons of Metal Cruise

Cheers,
Peter

I live in Bangalore, India. And traffic is nothing short of a chaos here.
I often think if I can get the Aladdin's Magic Carpet to move around.
Not just that it is faster, free of traffic snarls, but is non polluting as well.

My partner and I traveled to Vietnam for a wedding, and part of the experience was a boat trip with a traditional lunch on board and a whole day of sightseeing.

I am a person who never ever stays still (even when I appear still, there is part of me moving), and it was pretty hard to embrace a day-long boat trip, but the beautiful nature I saw worthed every second of stillness.

I would totally go on an F1 car or helicopter ride, but I doubt I would do too long of trips :)

Never been on anything like that, but if I had to choo-choo-choose the VIA rail through the rockies would be a gorgeous train trip I'm sure.

I've really enjoyed a number of dolphin "cruises" we've taken over the years. Dolphins were always my favorite animals growing up, and it's always fun to watch them ride the wake created by the boat. Here's a video from a trip to Florida last May for my friend's wedding: https://photos.app.goo.gl/bezau2iXgWwin4wR6

Sounds like so much fun!

In Estonia where I live we have cruise ships and they're magical during Christmas time. Went on such a trip once, it was two nights. Honestly, if you're lacking the Christmas spirit, that would boost it right away!

It was a little bit of leisure, but last fall, I was able to do the California Zephyr from Chicago, and while the experience wasn't the best, it brought me some stunning views of half the country.
