Why is Trello saying another member did an action when it was actually me?

Rose Levovitz January 8, 2024

Sometimes a board/card member will move a card or edit it in some way, and the notification we get says a different member did it. It usually says the action was performed via Butler. Is this a problem with automations or what? Does anyone else have this issue?

Butler automations are run on behalf of the member who created it, this is by design and not an issue.

My recommendation to all my clients and best practice I apply is to have a service account for automations so that you don't have this confusion.

  1. Create an email address. I use the format mikebot@companydomain.com, where mike is the company name.
  2. Sign up to a Trello account using this username.  During that process, name it in a similar way @mikebot
  3. Add to the board and move all automations to this account
  4. Allow those authorised to create/manage automations access to it

This also protects against someone leaving the company and you losing access to automations set up in their Trello account
