Custom Fields power-up behaviour has adversely changed

I checked into my Trello boards today and saw that the Custom Fields power-up has changed. Please advise how I would now:

  • change the name of the custom fields button
  • hide a field from the front of the card
  • add icons/emoji to the field name to provide visual reference point
  • create a rating system for cards using star emoji

Additionally, before the change, a text field with a hyperlink could be clicked on to go straight to the link destination. Now what's gone from a single middle-click action, has turned into a multi-step process:

  1. enter the field
  2. copy the link to the clipboard
  3. browse to a new tab
  4. 'paste and go' into the address bar

Or:

  1. enter the field
  2. triple-click to select
  3. right-click for context menu
  4. navigate to and select 'Go to ...' menu option

I'll be honest, these changes become more than a bit of a productivity drag, as well as cluttering up the board with secondary information that needs to be captured, but doesn't need to be presented on the card fronts.

What's the plan to make this a useful feature again?

Thanks

Thanks for the comments, I was surprised that the functionality was stripped away.

Seems fine to me.

Card name is an emoji, as is the result of the dropdown custom field

This was in a dropdown with options of 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 stars. All displayed correctly in the dropdown and once selected.

But I just inserted them from a system emoji picker.

Thank you... I tried to pick the emoji from an emoji picker and did not work.

So if I add :exclamation: in a card description or comments is fine, the image is displayed but if I use the same in a custom field or title just the text :exclamation: is displayed and not the image.

I tried the following emoji picker http://onesignal.github.io/emoji-picker/demo/ and it only worked the unicode input...and the emoji is displayed in black and white and not in color.

Hi Jag,

Yes, we did release a major foundational update to Custom Fields that's come with a handful of changes. Many of these were necessary in order to allow for further updates down the road, but we've made a series of updates throughout the week to address some of these and other comments.

That said, you're not able to change the name of the Custom Fields button, or hide the fields from the front of the card at this time, though we're tracking those requests!

We removed the emoji picker, that's true, but you can always use your native OS's emoji picker: https://blog.getemoji.com/emoji-keyboard-mac

We did add back a clickable arrow for when we detect that the text is a hyperlink which will let you in one click open the link. We're working on it!

@Mike - is there a new limit on how many custom fields you can have in a single board now? I know this used to be limited to five, but it appears that's changed and I can't find any documentation on that anywhere.

Also, did the number of values I can add to a single-select dropdown field also change? Is there a limit on this number of values for a single field?

It seems the maximum number of custom fields in one board is now 50. I don't know about the number of values in a dropdown field.

And because we don't all use Macs, here's how to insert emojis on Windows 10 Fall Creators Update:

though we're tracking those requests!

Great. Please consider this as another request to be able to hide the display of custom fields on the front of cards.

I understand the need to maybe remove some functionality from a power-up for allowing further maintainability and support down the road.

But then perhaps you could also update the couple short paragraphs which describe the power-up to reflect the reduced feature set?

I just lost quite a bit of time until finding this thread trying to figure out why I couldn't get it to work the way the power-up description is showing (emoji picker missing, no type icon for the custom field in the front of the card, etc). Changes are fine, but please document them for your users.

Hi David,

We try to!

Maybe you could tell me where you're seeing an out-of-date description? Both our Help page (https://help.trello.com/article/1067-using-the-custom-fields-power-up) and the Power-Up description (https://trello.com/power-ups/56d5e249a98895a9797bebb9/custom-fields) have been updated. You're right about the type icon, though! Are you seeing an out of date description somewhere else?

Here's a real simple way to add emoji's.  Use your cell phone.  Log into trello.  And with your phones key pad type your text and enter your emoji.
