Autofill Trello Custom Field when Crmble Contact Selected

Frank Marsch September 27, 2024

I've recently enabled Crmble on my Trello boards. I am primarily using this to hold a list of contacts and contact data, but will begin to use more of the features soon. I would like to know if there is any automation I can setup that will fill in some custom Trello fields (like first name, last name, email) when the Crmble contact is selected. I also have an account with Zapier, so if that helps accomplish this, it is an option.

@Frank Marsch hey frank! think i saw your post in r/trello and was about to jump in and respond but got distracted haha. So I don't know how i'd achieve this because I don't think there is any way to watch for Crmble actions, ie, there's no zapier triggers or trello triggers that I know of for when a crmble contact is set.

But perhaps a bigger question - what's the use case for why you'd want to duplicate that contact information to custom fields when it's already there on the card via Crmble?

@Brittany Joiner Thanks for the reply.  We have quite a bit of Zapier based automation setup for our Trello boards that utilize custom fields we've created.  We wanted a way to store a list of contacts so that we weren't inputting data like name, email, phone, company every time we created a new card.  That's why we enable Crmble to try to assist with that.  Unfortunately, as you've confirmed, we can't get Crmble to work with this automation.

If you have another suggestion that might perform this task we'd love to hear about it.  Ultimately, we'd like the ability to store a list of contacts and their data.  When a new Trello card is created, we'd like the ability to search those contacts and then fill in the contact data into fields that can be used in Zapier based automation.

Ahhh i see. Could you do it the other way around? Could you set the custom fields and then automate creating a crmble contact from that? While there's no trigger for "when a crmble contact is added", there is a zapier action/event for creating a crmble contact and you can reference the info in the custom fields. Would that work?

At the moment, the only reason we enabled Crmble was to store contacts data and make it searchable and shareable across team members.  Trello custom fields do not allow that functionality that I can tell.  So doing it the other way around would defeat the purpose.

If it's not possible to fill in Trello fields when a Crmble contact is selected, we'll continue to search for another solution.

Gotcha. You might also be interested in using Amazing Fields Power-Up. They integrate more nicely with custom fields (they sync together) and they have a field type that lets you create options from existing cards. (Ie if you had a board of contact details, you could select a contact from a dropdown on a card.) Would that work?
