Why can't I select OAuth for GitHub Enterprise?

Chris Plottke January 25, 2022

I'm using SourceTree on a Mac.

I'm trying do add an account under  preferences -> accounts.

I've selected GitHub Enterprise for the Host.

The Auth Type field below says Basic and is greyed out, not able to be changed.

If I instead select just GitHub, it does allow me to select OAuth instead of Basic auth type.

Why is that? Is there a technical reason why SourceTree does not support OAuth for GitHub enterprise? I would find that surprising. Or is it just a commercial restriction because GitHub enterprise is a competitor to BitBucket? But I don't see anything about that on the website. Is there a version of SourceTree that does support it?

Using Basic auth type fails with a "Password authentication is not available for Git operations", even using my personal access token as the password.

FYI

GitHub Enterprise Server- Only PAT

GitHub Enterprise Cloud - PAT, OAuth

Login with PAT - should support both of those

For OAuth here's the reference
