What do they symbols in a commit message panel mean?

When viewing commit messages in SourceTree there is always a symbol in the upper right hand corner of that pane. What does it mean? What does it's color mean?

It's an identicon. If you don't want to clickthrough, it's a geometric pattern generated by the string representing the commit author (i'm not sure if it is the full author name, or just the email).
