How do i tell which commit a file was entered on?

I have a file I commited a while back. I can't remember which commit I posted it on. On Github for example each file lists the commit message and ID of that commit on which it was committed. How can I find the commit that the file was commited on without having to search the contents sequentially of each commit?

please advise.
