Marketplace Spotlight: DeepAffects

Hello Atlassian Community!

My name is Emilee, and I’m a Product Marketing Manager for the Marketplace team. Starting with this post, I'm kicking off a monthly series of Spotlights to highlight Marketplace apps and use cases that our team thinks this Community would find valuable. As this is just our first take, please feel free to leave feedback in the comments section below.

This month, we want to highlight one of our newer apps, DeepAffects - Team Dynamics Analytics for Jira, which is an incredible tool that can help you better understand the emotional health of your teams and make them more productive.

What does it do?

DeepAffects has been doing research in a new-ish field called emotion analytics. They entered last year's Codegeist competition, where developers build new apps for Atlassian products and compete for prizes, and came up with an app that applies their research to JiraWith this app, you can track how much time of your team's time is spent in different emotions, the team's happiness index, and the team's trust network. The app is currently Cloud only, but available for both Jira Software and Jira Service Desk.

The effects of emotions on productivity

Having a basic understanding of your team’s emotional health can be incredibly useful. In a more in-depth post on our blog, co-written with DeepAffects, we dove into the data from their research, which analyzed hundreds of open source projects in Jira Software. Sentiment and productivity analyses were performed to identify what emotions teams were expressing through their projects and how productive they were in delivering those projects.

Analyzing the data, we saw that the most common emotions people express within their team projects are trust and anticipation, which we believe are positive signals of team productivity.

Additionally, the information showed that high performing teams tend to experience less anger in their work, only 16% of the time, whereas low performing teams are experiencing anger at a high of 30% of the time.

We also noticed that high performing teams tend to experience twice as many positive emotions compared to low performing teams, leaving us with the conclusion that happy teams get more work done.

If you want to find out how happy your teams are, check out the app in Marketplace here.

What are your thoughts on using emotional analytics in your work process? Have you previously used any tools to track this information?

Hello! This sounds intresting. Can you shed some light on privacy protection?

Thanks, Sanja. Data privacy & protection is core to our product design. We apply access control of Atlassian jira to provide restricted access to deepaffects analysis. Also, security controls are in place to audit & report user access. As data privacy is a pretty broad topic, anything, in particular, you want to learn?
