With the recent addition of Stride and other chat support, will this plugin be adding plain XMPP support? That would be very useful for those who don't want our messaging locked into a proprietary platform.

There's no plans to support plain XMPP messaging at the moment.
I've raised it at https://codebarrel.atlassian.net/browse/AUT-752 to track and see if we get some traction on it.
