MARS™

One of our unique offerings at Blended Perspectives is our Marketplace Analytic Research Service (MARS) database of Atlassian Marketplace 3rd party apps.

While many Atlassian Partners make their own apps, we believed that we could bring greater value to our customers and the Atlassian Community as a whole by creating a quantitative and objective database covering every facet of the Atlassian Marketplace.

MARS contains a vast array of data from instances, reviews, and pricing, to platform, app growth, and version releases. This is all tied together at the top level through our meaningful app categorization in which, for every app with over 500 instances, we carefully assigned our own categories based on the primary functionality of each app. We do this instead of using Marketplace app categorizations which are somewhat meaningless due to vendor self-selection. This means that MARS can give us a completely unique perspective into which apps are really excelling and driving forwards in the Marketplace.

Every month we like to highlight the app that we think has stood out the most over the previous month, which last month was Dashboard Hub for Jira by Appfire!

Dashboard Hub for Jira

Dashboard Hub for Jira is a very interesting app that teams and organizations can use to quickly build powerful dashboards and reports.

Dashboard Hub was originally the product of RoninPixels who were acquired by Appfire in late 2021. At the time we made the claim that “it’s certain that we’ll be welcoming RoninPixels into the 500 Club very shortly” and this proved to be correct with Dashboard Hub for Jira reaching the 500 instance threshold in March.

Dashboard Hub has had an excellent 2022, already growing by 60% since the start of the year. This is a continuation of its spectacular 2021 growth where it grew from close to 0 instances to well over 300.

While Dashboard Hub also has a Confluence version (Dashboard Hub for Confluence), here we will be focusing on its Jira version.

In a very competitive space with an incredible amount of innovation happening, Dashboard Hub for Jira has managed to stand out. Reporting as a category has been the 4th fastest growing in 2022 so far, only being behind Diagramming, Testing, & Requirements Management. Going up against the giants of eazyBI and Custom Charts for Jira by Old Street Solutions in the Reporting category, Dashboard Hub has managed to excel with its incredible feature depth and wide range of use cases.

Figure 1: eazyBI, Custom Charts for Jira, Dashboard Hub for Jira: Size and Growth

As Figure 1 shows, although Dashboard Hub is smaller than its two main competitors in this space, its growth over this year has been by some distance the fastest. This 60% growth rate for Dashboard Hub for Jira is even more impressive when you consider that both eazyBI and Custom Charts for Jira have had excellent starts to 2022 too. Their respective install growth rates of 10% and 17% respectively are far higher than the Marketplace average of 4%.

Figure 2: Trend Growth

When looking at trend growth in Figure 2 we can see that although Dashboard Hub has been growing rapidly over the past year or so it still has a lot of ground to make up over the more established players. It’s worth noting that much of eazyBI’s growth in 2021 came from the rolling up of the Cloud version of its app into the same app as the DC/Server versions.

In terms of pricing, Dashboard Hub is more competitive than its two main competitors. Figure 3 demonstrates that, in particular at higher user tiers, Dashboard Hub represents the best value for money–it is also free on Cloud for under 10 users.

All three of these Jira reporting tools are fantastic at what they do. When compared to Dashboard Hub, eazyBI is a more comprehensively powerful tool, although this added power comes with additional complexities in set up and usability. Custom Charts is also a superb reporting app that allows you to make beautiful custom charts. However, with its focus on custom charts it doesn’t have pre-built templates and gadgets like Dashboard Hub.

Congratulations to Dashboard Hub for Jira!

Templates

Use Cases

Internal & External ITSM Reporting

JSM is not natively optimized for both internal and external reporting. However, Dashboard Hub can overcome both of these difficulties:

Internally, support managers often need to report at the portfolio level (not just on a by project basis) but JSM reports are done at the project level. Dashboard Hub lets users create dashboard reports across projects giving them visibility across their entire portfolio.

Externally, since there is no way to safely share native JSM reports, clients don’t have visibility into key metrics. Therefore in order to be transparent about whether SLAs are being met, support managers have to manually create reports in a time consuming and inefficient way. On the other hand, Dashboard Hub lets users share secure live links to Dashboards to those who don’t have access to the instance.

Cloud Migrations

Since Dashboard Hub provides Hybrid Dashboards (that show data from Server, DC, & Cloud instances), users can ensure their dashboards are up to date from day one of their cloud migration since all of the data from their old instance will be available on their new dashboard.

Building Custom Reports

Although Dashboard Hub’s 70 pre-built gadgets cover most of the common use cases for teams looking to report on their work, every team works slightly differently. Therefore, Dashboard Hub’s ability to let users easily create customized line, tile, bar, & pie charts with deep configurations can be invaluable.

You can read more about Dashboard Hub’s custom charts functionality here.

Single Source of Truth

Since Dashboard Hub lets users report across instances in the same dashboard, Dashboard Hub can act as a single source of truth.

This is particularly true in PPM since Dashboard Hub integrates with Projectrak and is soon to be integrated with BigPicture (an example of Appfire synergy and increased product integration).

Engineering teams can also benefit from reporting cross project release information.

DevOps teams can have centralized alerts and incidents from Opsgenie, Statuspage, Bitbucket pipelines, and (soon) GitHub.

Summary

In a competitive space, Dashboard Hub has really found a great space for itself with its unique approach to reporting in Jira.

The team behind Dashboard Hub are putting a lot of effort into innovating around the product, particularly in the realms of Enterprise readiness and integrating with other tools.

Congratulations to Appfire and the team at RoninPixels!
