Copying XLS files and Jira Excel plugin

Hi All,

I'm not quite sure if this is a bug or not. It seems to me to be.

I'm finding if I copy an XLS file, where I've used the Jira Excel plugin, then both files share the same query in the plugin.  Which leads to unexpected behaviours.

Example:

1) I create a file "qtr1.xlsx".  In it I create a query to Jira, where I'm querying Qtr1 data.. all looks good.

2) I copy the qtr1.xlsx file in Windows and call it qtr2.xlsx.   I do this because I want to reuse the same formulas, charts etc.   I close all XLSX files, and open qtr2.xlsx.  I alter the jira query to pull in Qtr2 data.

When I go back and open the qtr1.xlsx file.. and look at the plugin query - its changed to being the same as the Qtr2 file.  So I change it back to the Qtr1 query.

If I then open the Qtr2 file, I find that ones changed back to Qtr1s query.

It only seems to happen with copied files.  Its as though the plugin is confusing the two files.

Plugin version: 1.1.0.0 (I think.. hard to tell..)

Best way I solved this.
Stop using the Excel add-in use your browser as normal.

1 - Create filters in Jira - Save different filters for each reason;
2 - Export the filter result (excel or csv)
3 - I need to do this step in order to work in Power BI (big $ numbers) -> type 1 in any cell away form the results, copy it, select the whole table and paste special (values + multiply) - this will ensure data is good
4 - copy the data to your original table where you used to have the add-in running

Do not refresh using the add-in.

You are good to go!

Thanks for your view Rodigo.  But.. the whole point of the plugin is to help improve productivity and make things consistent and easier.   What your suggesting works for when one person is the only editor.   If you've several people with access to edit the sheet, then each persons manual "export" from Jira can lead to different columns being exported and it can create a mess.  If the answer is to "just do it manually".. then no point in Atlassian developing the plugin at all.

Hello everyone,

Thank you, @Rodrigo Lins, for sharing this community post in an Atlassian support ticket. My name is Petter, I'm a Jira support engineer.

As I mentioned on the ticket created by Rodrigo, the behavior described here is a known bug in the Jira Cloud for Sheets app, and we have a public report for that in the link below:

Using a copied spreadsheet in Jira Cloud for Excel produces changes in the original spreadsheet

Please feel free to vote and watch the bug to increase its priority and receive updates about its fix implementation or new possible workarounds from our PMs and the DoS team involved in its resolution.

For now, the only way to work around the problem is to avoid the option to copy the spreadsheet. Instead, try to copy/paste (Crtl C/Crtl V) its content directly into a new empty spreadsheet.

Thanks!

@adrimars  I am facing the same issue here. Did you get any response from PIF-35300?

Same issue here.

We created a dashboard template, to be used by the project manager for their own project.

Each of them need a specific request on his local version of the template... but it seems that "Get Jira Data" keep the latest query written on any of the template copy across the company.

Did you find a workaround ?

what kind of modification should I do to make sure it's considered as different file by the plugin ?

Many thanks upfront for your feedback !

No workaround Benoit.  I've made the Atlassian support team aware of the issue though.

Hello @adrimars

It seems that this is a bug from the plugin itself, since it returns the query into a previous state.

I'd suggest to contact the vendor support.

Are you using the one from Atlassian?

If yes,you can raise a support ticket for them:https://support.atlassian.com/contact/

Hope this helps!

Br,

Nikola

Hi Nikola,  Thanks for the reply.

Yes this is on the official plugin with Atlassian.  Definitely seems to be a bug, and sadly not the only one.

I've opened PIF-35300 as a bug report from within the plugin.  I'll also open a case to my IT dept to ensure we track it here.
