10 Profields features you didn't know about

Lately, Profields is becoming a must among the Atlassian Marketplace apps, if you want to do project tracking properly. It eliminates the chaos of instances that many projects suffer, and enables managers and Jira administrators to have a greater degree of control.

If you are a user or you have tried the app, you may already know the power of our Project Navigator and its views, or the flexibility that project level fields provide. You may even know about the advantages of having different layouts, but there are some features that you may likely be unaware of. We have listed them for you below:

The probably less known features of Profields: Conditions, Validations and Post-functions based on Profields data. In this article, you can find further information. But, if you are a Jira administrator, you already know their importance; and if you are a user you may imagine the possibilities. For instance, think about having the chance to condition the creation of issues if the project status is other than Open.

Search issues based on project fields

This is one of the key features of Profields. Profields focuses at project level whereas the most important entity for Jira is the issue. How can you perform a search for issues based on Profields attributes? Profields integrates a feature in the JQL which allows you to search for issues:

Filters are one of the great functionalities in Profields but did you know they can be shared? You only need to make them public and share it by email, or chat by sending the URL of the filter. Besides, you can get to know how many followers it has and when was the last time it was queried.

Subscriptions

Following the filters, one of the most powerful features Profields has is to subscribe to them.. It is a feature very similar to Jira subscriptions, adding the fact the app will show the changes since the latest email notification

Map project fields into a Jira custom field

You can “map” Profields fields with Jira fields. This, in addition to enabling issue searches, will let you use the dashboards and get statistics from issues according to the data on your projects.

Cascading fields

Imagine you want to have several levels of fields, having for instance a list of “Locations” which will be loaded according to a “Region”, with Profields you will be able to do it with every field of type list, consisting of N levels, and its use would look like this:

{} APIs: Rest & Java

Either because you have an app of your own, either because you have an independent system or Script Runner, you should know that Profields exposes APIs: on the one hand you have a Java API that will let you extract and update the information of your projects, on the other hand you have the REST API which will let you perform virtually the same operations as if you were on Jira or trying to extract or update information from an external system.
