Difference between custom fields and components

Hi,

I would like to know the difference between custom fields and components:

- what are

- when to use

- will be good with some examples

Thank you,

Cristina

Hi @Cristina-Elena Andrei

Components is a system field that allows user to select multiple values.

The difference with a customfield such as muli-select list are:

  • Components support autocompletion
  • Components options can be defined by the project admin vs customfield where options has to be created by the admin.
  • Components options exist in 1 project where with a customfield you can have the same option across multiple project.
  • You can assign a component lead to each option and auto- assign issues base on this, you cannot do it with a customfield (except creating automation rule)

You can use components to categorize your Jira issues.
