How to get the "Fix Version" release-selection field shown and editable for JIRA issues?

Luke Nickerson July 12, 2021

I'm working in a project that has the permission "Resolve Issues" given to "Application access (Any logged in user)". When I open up an issue I don't see the "Fix Version" field, nor the option to edit it anywhere. How can I get the "Fix Version" (aka. Release Version) shown for all issues in the project, so that I can assign issues to releases?

A similar issue is here -- https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/Adding-issues-to-release/qaq-p/731523 -- but the resolution "I fixed it. It was not listed on the edit screen." doesn't have enough details to be useful.

I was able to resolve the issue by doing the following:

  1. Open the project and click Project settings on the left
  2. Open Fields
  3. Click the (almost hidden) pencil icon on the top right
  4. Search for Fix and click the magnifying glass, and find the "Fix versions" row
  5. Click the "Screens" link under "Actions"
  6. Get completely confused by all the screen names...
  7. Click the checkmark next to all the screens (because I have no idea what "screen" is named what)
  8. Click the (greyed out but not disabled) "Update" button at the bottom.
  9. Refresh the issue, and the "Fix versions" field is now shown.

Make sure you enabled the releases feature in your project as explained here:
