When Issue is created, edit issue field so that the field matches that of the Epic link's same field

Jessica Shim September 22, 2023

Hello! I am trying to create an automation where:

When Issue is created, and Issue Type is one of Story, Bug, Task, or Sub-task, then edit issue field "Custom Field A" so that the field matches that of the Epic link.

For example, if Epic A has "Custom Field A" of "XYZ," then when I create a child issue Story, Bug, Task, or Sub-task, I would like that child issue's "Custom Field A" to also have "XYZ."

It doesn't have to be an automation if there's a better way... Open to learning! I hope the screenshot helps. I just added the description in hopes of being clear.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi @Jessica Shim ,

On the automation you are creating ... on each field you've selected on the Edit Fields component, click on the three dots on the left side and select SET .. then will be able to select different options to copy the value from .... on of those options is Copy from Epic

I will be waiting for your comments. šŸ˜‰

Hi @Jessica Shim ,

First of all you need to make sure that mentioned Issue Types have this custom field included into the Fields Scheme. To do that you need to:

  1. Select Project Settings
  2. Navigate to Issues -> Fields
  3. Check that the Fields Scheme used for needed Issue types includes the "Custom Field A"

The next step will be to make sure that the layout of Story, Bug, Task, or Sub-task contains the "Custom Field A":

  1. Select Project Settings
  2. Issues -> Layout
  3. Identify needed issue type
  4. Click "Edit Issue Layout" link
  5. Add "Custom Field A" to any section in the center of the screen (if it's not there already)

Now we need to check that the Create Issue screen has "Custom Field A" included:

  1. Select Project Settings
  2. Issues -> Screens
  3. Identify needed Screen Scheme and expand it
  4. Click "Create Issue" screen
  5.  Add "Custom Field A" to the list of fields (if it's not there already)

And finally in your rule modify the "Edit Issue" action:

  1. Click "Choose fields to set..."
  2. Select "Custom Field A"
  3. Put there "Copy from Epic" option

I hope this answer will help you to resolve an issue.

Best wishes,

Helen

Hello @Jessica Shim

Thanks for the screenshots! You're almost there, just a tiny tweak needed.

When you're at the description field, hit the three dots and choose 'Copy' instead of 'Set'.

To complete the process, please follow these steps:

  1. Locate the ellipsis (three dots) icon next to the description field that you've selected.
  2. Click on the ellipsis icon to open the options menu.
  3. In the options menu, select 'Copy' instead of 'Set'.
  4. New options will appear, and from there, choose copy 'From Epic Issue'.
  5. Finally, select 'Copy from Description'.

Feel free to use this for any field you want. Hope this helps!
