How do I link sprint fields between JPD and a Jira project

Susie Barber March 7, 2024

We have added the sprint field to our JPD boards and would like to populate them with sprints created in our Jira projects.  Is there a way to do that? It would be extremely helpful to  assign sprints to JPD ideas as we do our quarterly planning.   All sprints are currently created in the Jira project.

Hi @Susie Barber , while I don't have direct experience with this issue, check out this prior thread which indicates automation would be needed to populate fields:

Hi @Susie Barber

What would that look like to you, in JPD, if it worked as you wanted?

Thinking back to my time doing "big room planning", I envision a big board (paper or virtual) showing the quarter, with lanes for teams, columns for sprints (and one out of scope column at the far end), and mapped requests to the grid to help understand delivery timeframes, dependencies, etc.

However...sprints in Jira are associated to a software project.  And so there would be a couple of challenges for use with JPD:

  • The idea issue would need a delivery issue associated to it, to link to the project(s), and those would already need to be mapped to a sprint.  And so there is a chick-and-egg problem during quarterly planning.
  • (And something I have not tried...) assuming an idea could be linked with a sprint field to a software project, that would then impede the sprint being completed without completing the idea.

If instead the idea held only the name of the sprints, not a link to it, that could be set with a global scope automation rule from the delivery issue data.  Or, a simple select list of candidate-sprint-time-frames could be used in the JPD project...delegating to the team product champions for updates as the delivery teams work.

Kind regards,
Bill
