Change field type

Is it possible to change the field type of a custom field without deleting it and recreating a new one?

You can't change the field's type (for example, making a single-select field into a multi-select field). To change a field's type, you must recreate the field using the desired type.

However, I believe this is a change we'd all love to see made available.
