Import a large number of options for a select/multi-select field in Jira Product Discovery

Hi all,

I learn something new every day. A user was asking if it was possible to import options for a select/multi-select field (they use it to tag customers on ideas) and I thought it wasn't possible.

But it turns out I was mistaken! I came across this article: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/how-to-bulk-add-options-to-custom-fields-via-external-system-import-1115662994.html
I tried it and it works in Jira Product Discovery projects as well.

First things first: You'll need the BULK_EDIT global Jira permission to do this. If you have the Jira Administration Product admin role as per below, you will have these permissions out of the box.

Now we're ready to begin:

  1. Create your desired field in the JPD project as a select or multi-select.
  2. Prepare a CSV with the options you want available in the select or multi-select field. We're creating and importing ideas with the desired field values, with 1 idea for each field value. The CSV should contain columns for:
    1. Issue key - Create new issues to avoid overwriting existing ones.
    2. Summary - This is mandatory when creating an idea, add any dummy value here.
    3. Field name - with your desired values.
  3. Open Settings > System > External System Import. Select CSV and your CSV file.
  4. Select the project you want to import to.
  5. Map CSV fields to Jira fields and tick the 'Map field value' box.
  6. Select Next and Begin import

Hit refresh on your JPD project and Voila! Here's a demo on Loom. You can remove the ideas you created and the field and its values will still be available to use.

Awesome, thanks a lot @Tanguy Crusson & @Rohan Swami! This saved a lot of time. I appreciate it.

For anyone else wondering the initial use-case I shared with the JPD team:

As a user, I would like to be able to upload a CSV of options for a multi-select field in JPD, so that I don't have to manually add an type in each option when I have a lot of options.

For example, we have dozens of Product Areas and Customers. Adding these manually by typing in each one individually is annoying and time-consuming.

In the Edit modal for a multi-select field in a JPD project, it would be nice to have an 'Upload' button near the 'Add option' button, to import a simple CSV file (e.g. of a list of field options) to add a bunch of options at once.

Even better, it would be great to be able to keep fields in sync across JPD & Jira Software (which I heard the JPD is working on a solution for), so that if a new option is added in JPD for example, the new option would also be available in Jira Software.

@David Nadri we're currently working on the ability to share fields between JPD projects, and use global Jira fields in JPD projects. Which I think would be even better for your use case (you'd only need to change things once, no need to sync). It's not trivial work so will take a while to land, but we're on it.
