📣 A (giant) update for hierarchies, issue types, opportunity/solution trees

Hi everyone,

I'm super excited to share this demo today for this concept that we've been brewing for quite some time.

The #1 feature request we get for JPD is, consistently and since the early days of this app, for it to support hierarchies. We've always felt that this was going to open Pandora's box: what a lot of customers value the most about the tool is its simplicity coupled with the flexibility - with hierarchies we were facing the risk of turning JPD into a steam engine.

This time we think we found a solution that gives the problem justice without bloating the app:

And you can see it in action below (new demos updated on 27 March):

How to set this up across multiple JPD projects:

It's still early stage: we've been iterating with lighthouse customers before general availability. This feature will be part of the upcoming premium plan for JPD.

Once we're done with this we're currently thinking of following with a new type of view to better support the visual aspects of opportunity/solution trees:

As usual, we welcome your feedback and questions! You know what to do 👇

Update on 30 March: We are currently planning to launch the JPD Premium plan in the next month, which contains this feature.. HOWEVER this comes with all the usual disclaimers: we're still hitting road blocks on a weekly basis (so far we've managed to wiggle our way around those though!), murphy's law is a thing, the best way to make the gods laugh is to tell them about your plans, etc. Anyway, you get the picture: if I were you I'd take that date with a pinch of salt.

Premium has a bunch of features, described here. This one will be part of it and marked as "Coming soon": but we'll make it so you're able to turn it on to use it.

Here's what you'll be able to do as soon as the Premium Plan launches:

  • Upgrade to a trial of the Premium plan
  • Turn on this feature in the Jira admin settings for the site
  • Use the feature and decide if it's right for you
  • If it's right for you you can stay on the Premium plan post trial
  • If not and you don't see value out of the other features, then you can simply downgrade back to the Standard plan, no harm done.

We'll let you know as soon as you can do so.

Great! I’m excited to try it out. I agree—it feels more like core functionality than a premium feature.

Incredibly disappointing to see this feature under the premium tier, especially since you called out how everyone has been asking for this from the very beginning, which to me indicates a core basic feature. This comes up on the forums frequently and there was never any indication that this wouldn't be a baseline feature for everyone. Please reconsider.

Very excited as well. If you need an 11th customer, we'd be happy to give it a spin! We have a pretty extensive hack to try to emulate this today and are very eager to simplify.

This functionality is going to be a game changer for us. Long awaited JPD feature and excited to see the early look. Will be waiting impatiently :) Thanks!

Can't wait to get my hands on it either although I have to agree if it was such a requested product it would have been nice to see it in the standard license (maybe limiting the hierarchy levels).

I am positively giddy about this. We've already started brainstorming how we will use this to communicate better when I spied this on the new JPD published roadmap. SO EXCITED!

Great news! We would be ecstatic to have access as soon as we can. We're currently hacking together a much less sophisticated version of this with automations and the Jira API/webhooks.

Looks fantastic! This would have been a huge help in increasing the usage of JPD across my team but unfortunately Premium is not an option for us at the moment so I'll join the others here in hoping that it ends up being a core feature at some point. Either way, JPD is still an awesome tool!

Cannot wait to use it!! It'll be amazing to elevate conversations above solutions so we can focus on delivering customer value rather than features. Great job!!

Damn - that's looking so promising and would resolve a number of issues for us as well as letting us use JPD more widely to replace those dreaded XLS files. And we're about to move to Premium too which is quite timely.

Hi, @Tanguy Crusson ! How can I become a lighthouse user?

Andrea Egert December 16, 2024

Thanks @Tanguy Crusson and team, It's so great to see that issue hierarchies are coming! I agree with the previous comments; this feature addresses a major JPD limitation, so having it as part of the base plan would be fantastic. From an implementation and adoption perspective, it would be beneficial if any existing custom field could theoretically be changed into a connection field. Otherwise, updating all the tickets and views will be a time-consuming admin and training exercise.

@Tanguy Crusson awesome stuff would love to be involved in the lighthouse group as you roll that programme out.

Currently we are using individual fields for the idea and opportunity links and sorting as per earlier workaround documentation in the forum, and given grouping by links isn't currently supported, we were having to make a trade off decision between making the parent opportunity link clickable, or 'group-able' (for want of a better word) - so, super excited to see this roll out.

Interested in how the vision for the former Atlas integration aligns with the product vision and the OST framework. Is the intention to house both business outcomes and product outcomes within Projects and Goals and link via JPD?

@Tanguy Crusson this is one of the few features I have missed from my old tool and the way you have approached it to give levels of flexibility looks really good.  If possible I would be very interested in being involved in any lighthouse you do.

This looks fantastic! Just what we were looking for to really drive our end to end workflow, from Discovery to Delivery.

Would love to be a part of the early testers.

Great improvement for JPD, thanks for sharing @Tanguy Crusson ! But as others said before, very sad to see it as part of the premium plan only when so many customers are asking for this functionality. Unfortunately, the premium plan won't be an option for us :-(   We are already far about budget as we had to extend the number of creators because of the limitations the contributor role is coming with (not what we expected when establishing JPD).

We had a meeting and discussion about this yesterday and glad to stumble upon this article and feature upcoming.

I noticed this is for "Premium". I do not see pricing for that. Or is Premium coming soon as well? We have the Standard plan right now and curious on pricing.

Love all the new features - thank you Atlassian!

Looks truly awesome  - Our team would also love to be a tester for these new features - both OST and Hierarchies. Would have a great case-study up and running for y'all very quick for a deep tech Hardware+Software B2B product!

@Tanguy Crusson - thank you! The new hierarchy and issue type features are a huge step forward, but making them Premium-only could limit their impact.

As many people have been saying, hierarchies and issue types are fundamental for organizing ideas, tracking opportunities, and aligning teams - core to any product discovery process.

Building them into the base plan would make JPD more accessible and drive adoption across teams of all sizes.

You could still incentivize upgrades to Premium by offering advanced customizations (e.g., adding more than 5 issue types).

PLEASE, please consider all the similar feedback and reconsider this decision!
