Here are a few things you should know about Jira Work Management (JWM) that will help you with integration…
JWM is built on Jira, which leverages issue types, workflows, etc. just like other Jira Projects (which makes integration easy!)
JWM uses templates to spin up projects around different business functions (sales, marketing, hiring, etc.)
Each template has a custom workflow and set of issue types.
Jira Work Management Projects can be integrated with Jira Align with the following steps:
Create a new Jira Work Management Project
When creating a Jira Work Management project you can either select a Team Managed or a Company Managed project as shown in the screenshot. You can find more about Team Managed and Company Managed projects at What are team-managed and company-managed projects? | Jira Software Cloud | Atlassian Support.
Teams that are Kanban in the Jira Align project can be created as either a Team or Company Managed Projects in Jira Work Management. If the Jira Align team will be scrum with sprints then the Jira Work Management must be Company Managed Project in order to route it through Jira Software Project’s sprint board.
Note: If you selected Team Managed Project for Jira Work Management then please proceed to step 5.
Create a new Jira Software Project
Update the Filter Share and Filter Query of the Jira Board associated with your new Software Project to bring in the Jira Work Management Issues
On The Board Settings (Jira Cloud) or Configure (Jira Server & Data Center) pages update the Filter Shares of the Board to be set to the Work Management Project and update the Filter Query to pull in the issues of the Work Management Project. For Scrum teams, you can also create sprints on the board's backlog that will be mapped to Jira Align Sprints.
Standardize the Issue Types on your Jira Work Management Project to your organization's default Issue Type Template used in Jira Align
Each JWM template uses different issue types (e.g. Customer issue type). Each of these issue types is a story-level issue type, meaning they can map to Jira Align (set up as Custom Issue Type in Jira Align), BUT at the same time, you might not want to manage each of these new issue types in Jira Align.
To do this…
Go to Project Settings -> Issue Types -> Actions -> Edit Issue Types
Clicking “Edit” on the scheme associated with the JWM Project created
Remove any custom issue type associated with the scheme you don’t want and add what you do want from the “Available Issue Types” list (click and drag works)
Integrate your Jira Work Management Project to Jira Align as a Scrum or Kanban Team
Map the Work Management Project to Jira Align as a normal Project as referenced here:Jira integration setup
For integrating team-managed projects reference the "Set up team-managed projects" section of the above guide.
Map the Jira Board to a Jira Align Scrum or Kanban team as referenced here:Jira management settings
You can also read more about integrating Kanban teams here:Jira and Jira Align Integration: Syncing Kanban Teams from Jira to Jira Align
You can now treat these teams as normal Scrum or Kanban teams in Jira Align.
Note: This is a method of Syncing a Jira Work Management Project with Jira Align at this time but it is currently not officially supported.
