Checkout Button not showing for file links

We have set up our repositories with file links (file://...) instead of URLs as suggested by Atlassian for performance reasons.
Now the Checkout Button is not visible although it is set to be visible. Only if I specify an extra URL for each repository, the button becomes visible.

Can I have a global setting with file link and checkout button for each repository without specifying the URL for each repository seperately?

I see that you were looking for a global option to configure that.

Yes, that can be done as well by going to the admin area and click Defaults(under 'Repository Settings').

On the SCM Details tab, either select, or clear, the Show Checkout URL checkbox:
