πŸ”Œ Plug into Jira: Move forward faster using CI/CD integrations

Plug into Jira banner.png

This week for Plug into Jira, we're highlighting CI/CD integrations. Check out the series overview here for more on what integrations we're deep diving into over the next seven weeks! Now let's get into it.

Let's say an upcoming feature just became a higher priority. Your teammates don't even know if work on the feature has started. But they opened up the Jira issue to see that the last build was successful and deployed to staging. What a relief - they can let leadership know that the feature will be ready on time for internal testing.

Not only is checking updates through Jira Software faster than asking someone, but work also doesn't need to stop for everyone to get the answers they need. Jira's CI/CD integration lets anyone see if a failed deployment creates a bottleneck. The whole team's development landscape is there.

With Jira's CI/CD integration, you can view deployments over time, get an overview of the performance of your CI/CD pipeline, and automate CI/CD workflows. Jira's CI/CD integration brings more than visibility - we've seen teams that integrate Jira Software with Bitbucket, for example, release 14% more often than those that don't.

Sound interesting? Read on for all the details, ask questions in the comments or join us next week for live Q&A during our CI/CD office hours. Get started by finding your CI/CD integration in the Atlassian Marketplace

Understand the where and when of deployments

What was last deployed to production? Has the latest bug fix shipped yet? Not everyone spends time in your CI/CD system, making these simple questions challenging to answer for most of your team.

When your CI/CD is integrated into Jira Software, the Deployments tab becomes live. You can see your deployment schedule in real-time and drill down for deployment details in the tab. For example, you can trace the history of each deployment to link specific bugs to previous deployments.

You will also be able to see deployment status in the board, issue view, and release tabs to get a quick overview of what has been deployed and to where.

Drive continuous improvement

Your Cycle time and Deployment frequency reports also become available with CI/CD integrations. These DORA metrics offer insights into the performance of your software delivery processes and the health of your CI/CD pipeline. Deploying frequently in small batches helps you reduce risks in production and deliver customer value faster. Cycle time captures the efficiency and speed of your software development system from code committed to code deployed.

Click insights in the deployments tab to see your cycle time and deployment frequency or visit your reports in Jira Software to find the full cyle time and deployment frequency reports.

Keep work flowing behind the scenes

Automation helps increase efficiency while reducing errors in your software development processes. Integrating with Jira Software extends your automation capabilities to CI/CD. When a production deployment succeeds, transition that issue to done. Or, if a build fails, send a Slack message to your team channel to let them know. These automations keep everything up to date and everyone aware of problems without having to review items in Jira Software.

Automate more of your workflow by integrating your CI/CD tools

Get started - integrate your CI/CD tools today

Bringing your CI/CD tools into Jira Software is easy. You can find the CI/CD integrations we support in the Atlassian MarketplaceWork with your Jira administrator to turn on the Deployments tab and configure your integration. Then include issue keys in your branch names, commit messages, and pull requests to display deployment information in your project. Check out this support article for more details.

We're excited for you to give integrating your CI/CD tools a try and help your whole team become more efficient and accelerate their work.

Thanks for sharing this @Scott White I'm looking forward to office hours next week.

In the mean time, do you know how a Marketplace Partner, like myself, can get there apps added to the in the screens you showed? I see that there are some Marketplace marketing labels used next to a curated list of apps.

I've been trying to get connected with the right people to get this process clear for some time but have not been successful so far.

Hi @Scott White thanks for your reply. I have reviewed the article related to the link you gave again but I don't see any way to get an app added on specific Marketplace marketing labels (like devops-ci and devops-cd), or in the toolchain page. Is there a specific person or group I can connect with for this?

This is interesting, all it's missing to actually be useful is AzureDevOps support

@Philippe B We have Azure Devops for newer projects,  but would like to link our Maintenance Legacy Projecs to Jira CI/CD as well

Hi @deddy here is more information on how to get started with a Jenkins integration into Jira Software cloud: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/integrate-with-jenkins/

As @Michael Whalen and @Mark Rekveld point out we recommend getting starting with this app: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1227791/jenkins-for-jira-official?tab=support&hosting=cloud.

Let us know how you go!
