reporting bugs against confluence is incredibly frustrating

honestly, i can't figure out how to report a bug against confluence.

i visited and select 'create', and the creation dialog contains this huge weird dialog with a button 'file new bug here' but that button just goes to the top of the support page, which doesn't actually have a 'report bug' option.   so, heading back to the issue-creation screen and ignoring the weird dialog, i go ahead and fill out the details of the issue and click 'create', and only then am i notified that i don't have permission to assign tickets. (note: apparently i can Create bugs, i just can't Assign them. hmmm)

really it's pretty demoralizing considering this is what we're using for our own bug tracking.

Er, why would you expect to have "assign"?  You don't know who is best placed to do the work, what sprint any work might go into, or even what team it's going to go to.

As a user, you can create bugs.  It's nothing to do you with you who the developers are, until they're chosen by the team.

i was unclear: i did not attempt to Assign. i attempted to Create, and that operation failed with the message i don't have permission to Assign.

i did not succeed at creating a bug.

j.a.c no longer allows you to create bugs. You have to work with support to do that

Probably a good idea - would reduce the number of duplicates!

it would save frustration if that fact were surfaced early in the bug creation process, rather than as a confusing error upon hitting 'create'.  if my account doesn't have privileges to create bugs that's fine, but it's a bad UX to lead me to expect otherwise. also the links Walter provided here seem secret.  

on the j.a.c. 'create' page (click 'create' on this page) there's a dialog which suggests that j.a.c. can't be used by ordinary users to create bugs, but doesn't actually come out and say that. it does have a button which reads "report a new bug", but that button just goes to the top of confluence support (double-slashes in the URL are [ sic ]), and that page in turn has no 'report new bug' option.  in fact that page doesn't even contain the word 'bug'.  the closest thing would be "product feedback: suggest features", which leads to this page, which does say "You can report bugs and request improvements to the product here, once you create an account and log in". However, upon clicking 'create', the user is back at the situation i described in my original complaint: there's a weird dialog which would take you back to the top of support, and if you go ahead and enter some bug details and click 'create', you get an error not about issue creation but about issue assignment: "User '<me>' doesn't have the 'Assign Issues' permission".

If you aren't sure about reporting a bug, I would suggest raising a support ticket instead. Just describe the bug and ask support to investigate if its a known issue or something new. If its a new bug, they can create the issue for you in JIRA.

thanks. i'm pretty sure. i searched the database, did not find the issue, and then i put together a pretty solid repro with screenshots every step of the way. ready to file a bug.

Then just complete the issue in JIRA as best you can smile

Leave it to Atlassian to fix up or assign anything else you aren't sure about.

i would love to do that. i was unable to create the ticket, however.
