boss has big excel spreadsheet, he wants that xls data imported into confluence then use confluence and not excel to manipulate data...is this doable?

This is not directly possible, but there are some Apps that you can try out from marketplace.

Hi Greg, welcome to the community! DPK_J is right. It is not possible natively. But Excellentable is a great option for large datasets with complex formatting. You can try the app for free for 30 days!

You may use the Table Filter and Charts for Confluence app and its Table from CSV macro.
The macro allows you to output a table from CSV or TSV data source and supports outputting data from a URL (Google Sheet/Google Drive) or an attached file.

Polaris spreadsheet for Confluence addon allows you to import an excel file in a confluence page and to manipulate data in a file. I believe it will be a good option for you.
