Wiki URLS - Nomenclature sometimes contains page name, sometimes not

Stephen Kairys April 7, 2016

In one of my client's spaces, when I view a page, the URL contains elements regarding to the page name/taxonomy e.g.

http://docs.MyCompany.com/display/CUSTOMER/API+Developer+Guide

when I edit it, the URL changes to instead include a pageid.

http://docs.MyCompany.com/pages/editpage.action?pageId=5308809

OTOH, in another space, the same URL, excerpt for "viewpage" vs "editpage" (with the pageid) displays whether viewing or editing:

http://docs.pulsepoint.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=9568628

http://docs.pulsepoint.com/pages/editpage.action?pageId=9568628

Bottom line

  1. What would explain this different behavior?
  2. If I move a page within a space and I have a link to it on another page, will the link break (e.g. will the pageid change?) I suppose the answer may depend on whether I use the link with the pageid?

Thanks,
Steve

Here is some more information:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/confluence-page-urls-contain-pageid-instead-of-the-page-title-278692715.html

Basically, if there are special characters in the page title, then it could cause problems in the URL, and it is therefore referred to by the page ID.

The page ID always stays the same after page creation, so it will work no matter which space it is moved to.

Even when moving a page with a standard link to another space, the link should be updated to point to the new space, so it doesn't matter whether you have a page with a standard link or with a pageId, both should have automatically-updated links even after moving.

Stephen,

Thanks for your reply. I must apologize b/c I did not specify that I am using Atlassian Cloud. The page you referenced in your link applies to Atlassian Server. Do you know how much of the info you provided applies to Cloud?

Thanks,

Steve

It is exactly the same for Cloud as well.

I also have a Cloud instance and it is the same.
