Why do licenses for download products start at $10 then jump to hundreds to dollars for the next level?

For example, why is a JIRA 1-10 user license $10 and the JIRA 11-25 user license $1,200?

Historically Atlassian's products started at the $800/$400 (commercial/academic) price point for 25 users. However, in the early days of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) Atlassian wanted to make our software more accessable to small teams and start-ups. The Atlassian "Stimulas Package" was a week long program in April 2009 where we sold 5 user licenses for for $5 for JIRA and Confluence and donated all the funds to Room to Read. We expected to sell ~5k licenses and raise $25,000 by the end of the week for the promotion, but we reached the goal within 23 hours. (Check out the blog we wrote up about the program.)

The success of the Stimulas program got us thinking... what if we made it permanant and bumped the user count to 10? In October 2009 we introduced the new Starter Licenses for most of our download products. These are fully-functional licenses, like commercial/academic licenses, for 10 users that costs just $10 and all the monies raised still go to Room to Read. (To date, the Starter License program has raised over $2 million dollars for Room to Read.)

When a Starter License holder user count grows beyond the Starter user limit, then the next step is to purchase the commercial/acadmic non-Starter user tier to support their needs. For questions about licensing please check out our Licensing & Purchasing FAQ or Contact our sales team.
