Why can't I edit a table in a page created from a template?

Using Confluence 5.4.2 (yes, I know, EOL; we're working on upgrading.) I have a custom template that has several tables added so users can enter contact info on pages created from the template. It's not using any fancy macro; just the native Table function. I can edit the tables in the template itself, but when a user creates a page from the template, the tables are not editable. Am I doing something wrong, or is this expected behavior?

I have templates with tables and we are able to edit.  Are you able to edit tables if you create a page?  Also what happens if you save and then edit the page again is it still not editable.
