I'm having trouble adding users to the confluence-administrators group. I saw another question about this but the solution that seemed to work for someone there did not work for me. When I try to add the user to the group I get the message ...
Can anyone tell me where this log is?
Confluence is installed locally on a Ubuntu server.
I'm working in Confluence 5.7.4 although this problem has existed for quite a while. It did not exist when I installed the system 3 years ago. I do not know what version it started with.
Oh, by the way, the Confluence logs are in <confluence_home_directory>/logs.
I had this issue when migrating to another server, with diferente address and ip.
After many hours of not working, i found and ip address pointing to old machine. The location in Jira is: User management -> Jira user server -> Edit -> IP Addresses. After i updated my Confluence authentication started work.

We are using AD integration. I have no doubt it is in some way related. First, find the information on the error, though.
Yes, I found /opt/confluence/logs/. There are several different kinds of logs in there. Any idea which one I should be looking at? Here is a directory listing ...

I've looked through a couple with today's date in it but I'm not finding anything that looks like messages related to group add errors.

Hey Quintin, That is not the right folder. The right folder has the 'atlassian-confluence.log' file. You need to directly edit your users groups in the AD. The confluence home folder is the one that you set in the 'confluence-init.properties' file located at <confluence_install folder>\confluence\WEB-INF\classes.

I added confluence-administrators to AD, added myself and synchronized AD but I still was not in there according to Confluence. Interestingly, I went to add myself through Confluence and it allowed me to. They must have changed something with the way AD works with the built-in confluence groups. I'll start chasing down AD sync issues now. I still have to hunt down that log, though. I think I'll work that next. Thanks.

catalina.log is more of your application server log ( tomcat apache ) log - look for atlassian-confluence.log instead.

Hi there,
Your system is probably using Crowd or LDPA to manage users, I believe that's why you can add those groups.
Cheers,
