Wanting to Migrate from Confluence Data Center to Cloud - How hard is it?

Edited

Hello,

I'm the Confluence administrator at my organization and looking to migrate our Confluence Data Center instance to Cloud by the end of the year. We have the migration assistant plugin installed and updated. I'm just starting requirements gathering now, but wondering how hard is it to complete? Do you just setup your cloud instance and then walk through the migration plugin steps until completed or?

Advice and insight welcome from anyone who has already completed this migration. Thank you in advance!

J

Hello @JA

The difficulty level depends on many factors.

Do you use any third party plugins in your Confluence instance? If so you need to find out if the vendors of those provide a version that is compatible with Confluence Cloud. Then you need to check if the Cloud version supports the same functionality. And then you need to check if the vendor actually has a method to migrate the app related data to the Cloud instance.

There may be Atlassian provided functionality in Confluence that is not supported by the Migration Assistant application. For instance Team Calendars information is not supported by the Migration Assistant.

There could be Atlassian provided functionality that is not supported in their Cloud product.

For functionality (Atlassian or third party) that is not supported in the Cloud app natively or by the original app vendor, you have to figure out what you want to do about that. Do you want to look for another Cloud app that can provide that functionality, or abandon the use of that functionality?

How much data do you have to migrate? If you have a large number of spaces, pages, attachments, users/groups, that can impact the complexity of the migration.

I advise you to read every scrap of information you can find about the migration process and options.

If it seems like an overwhelming task, consider engaging an Atlassian Solution Partner. Disclosure - I work for Praecipio which is an Atlassian Platinum Solution partner in the Americas. If you are in the Americas and are interested in working with us, let me know and I can get you connected to the right people in our organization to discuss that.
