We are using confluence for our internal team, however I'm consider using it for our clients to organise a conference. Can I separate out the information so that the external groups only see the project they are involved with and none of our other confluence information?

The way we solved this was by granting access to Confluence using the confluence-users group, but removing that group from the permissions of all spaces. Permissions to spaces are granted to other specific groups so that users who are only members of confluence-users actually have no access until they are given access to at least one other group.
For example, you might have three groups:
I've done the same thing, the problem I'm having is that I don't want the external users to see the update stream.
What comes up is pretty safe, like updating their picture. Do you know which permission would cover that
