I have a list of items I'm documenting and I want to use H2-H4 to make it readable to users.  I want a table of contents though so I have:

</table>

1 <h2>Item 1

  a <h3> detail 1

  b <h3> detail 2

  c <h3> detail 3

2 <h2>Item 1

  a <h3> detail 1

  b <h3> detail 2

But, if I have a numbered list such as the "Item 1" I can't put a header style on it, it's gray'd out.  If I make it:

<h2>Item 1

  1 <h3> detail 1

  2 <h3> detail 2

  3 <h3> detail 3

<h2>Item 1

  1 <h3> detail 1

  2 <h3> detail 2

then I can put a header style on Item 1 and Item 2, But our style is the first.

Hi @Robert Harris,

welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I would recommend you to use table of contents macro instead of create it manually. It will generate your TOC automatically based on the contents of the page and there are a lot of customizations available.

Yes, but the ToC macro won't let you add headings to lists. Robert is encountering the same issue that I am. He's trying to create a workaround. What customization would allow adding headings to lists or adding parts of a list to a ToC. I'm not seeing it.
