I want to make a table smaller in width, but when I try to resize it nothing happens.
After struggling for a while to find the original "button to the right", I have just found that now there is a way to grab the blue line to the right to resize a table.
Oh my days thank you, this has been annoying me!

I cannot even see the button to the right side of the table, lol.

Same problem. It's been this way ever since I started using Confluence in 2021. For my part it seems to be RANDOMLY triggered when you copy/paste content such as sections and pannels (with or without tables) and then trying to create a new table or edit an existing table that was previously copy/pasted).
It's quite annoying as it renders modifications impossible. A fix would be welcomed.

Hi Jesca, welcome to the Community!
The button to the right side of the table will let you toggle between "center", "wide", and "full width" table layouts. That's three possible table widths, and the editor doesn't have controls for fine-tuning the table width itself. You can adjust the columns however.
There are some situations where you might need a smaller table than the "center" width. In those cases, I might suggest using the layout sections, and putting the table inside of one of the section columns. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about, with a "center" width table below it for reference.
I hope that helps explain the options!
Cheers,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,
I am using a three-sectional. I don't mind that the table needs to take the full width of the section, but I want to avoid the scroll bar here.
Example shown below:Thanks!

Hi Daniel,
I would like an answer to this as well. Is there a fix?
When I create a table everything is OK.
When I click the "go wide" button it goes wider and everything is OK.
When I click the "go full width" button it goes full width and everything is OK.
But when I click "back to center" I do not go back to the initial condition.
The frame for the table comes back to initial width, but the table seems to be a bit wider. Now the table is wider than the frame it is in and now requires a scroll bar at the bottom.
The workaround I have is to re-create a new table from scratch, copy the data in from the old table and try not to ever click the "go wide" button.
Thanks,
Ben

I have the same issue. I create a table and it fits to the width. When I add a column, the scroll bar appears and I am not able to narrow the table.
It worked a while ago.

Exact same problem here as everyone else: @Daniel Eads
After changing the table width layout (cycling from center, wide, full) I can no longer change the actual width of my table. The full table is now only viewable by scrolling horizontally. There is no option to decrease the width of the table.

Wow, This is optimized UI controls gone a little too far.
In general invisible controls should be avoided. This is a case of an invisible control. As it's not visible until you mouse over it and have the right cursor context on page. Since the UI has opted for ultra small control indicators this can be easily missed.
Note this control ONLY shows if you have first put the cursor in the table then mouse SLOWLY out past the right hand side of the table. It will be a vertical bar the full height of the table. Not really seeing the obvious reason why you must have the cursor in the table for the controls to be operable. There must be some strange overlap of controls if all controls for all page objects are accessible at all time. So the choice was to only enable controls for page elements when the cursor focus was in that element. My guess.
I'm sure some of you remember the horrible UI experience that Windows 8 was. With invisible controls that never showed. Unless of course the mouse was in the exact right spot you could not operate the control. ( Note it also made it near impossible to use Windows 8 in a windowed VM. As the control was literally 1 pixel in a corner. Thus you could never actually hit it in a windowed VM or touch screen. )
This is not as bad as the win 8 experience simply because as you mouse over the control it does show. It lacks intuition. It's also a horrible experience for physically challenged users or those with poor vision.
Some UI expert is going to be upset when people like me ask for more clutter on the page. Please add more clutter for the controls.
