Rebuild Content Indexes

Adrian Mashuka June 13, 2017

First time user of Confluence 5.0.3 and my memory space is basically running slow. I read that content index might help with freeing up some space and are just wanting to make sure 1) if it is true and 2) that by doing so it wont delete anything that has been previously posted/added. The reason I need memory space is my 'EDITS' aren't updating in the main page and 'LABELS' and 'RENAMING' of pages is not functioning well either.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome first time user! Confluence 5.0.3 has reached End of Life, the instance will probably perform better if upgraded, as we have fixed quite a few bugs and introduced a lot of great features since 5.0.3.

Reindexing helps with search issues and certain other elements that depend on the content index. It won't delete any content, but also doesn't free up disk space or memory. Here is the full scoop on reindexing: Content Index Administration

For the performance issues you are experiencing, please see Performance Tuning.

I don't know what you're reading, but it does not sound right.

The content index takes up some space on the disk and is required for searching, it's nothing to do with speed or size. Rebuilding the index will not lose anything, it will just ensure if there are errors in the index, they will go away.

"memory space running slow" does not mean anything to me, could you explain that?

If your edits, renames and labels are not working, you need to look at the logs to see what's going wrong.

I meant low memory space. When I rename an existing page when that page says 'Page Not Found in this Space' and suggests I go to a different page. When I edit content I don't see the updates in my Dashboard under 'All Updates' and for the labels I add to existing pages they don't take me to the actual page nor work if I try searching by that new label. I'm sorry if something doesn't make sense but any help and/or advise is appreciated in guiding me to see what might be causing my issues.

It sounds like an index issue if All Updates isn't updating and searches are unreliable. Please try reindexing in the UI first, as in Content Index Administration and reindexing from scratch if that doesn't help.

Thank you very much I will try that!

Ok, not "running slow", but you suspect you are running low on memory.

Problem is that the symptoms you are seeing are not typical of low memory issues.   You don't know that running out of memory is causing them.

Also, one of the things about memory usage is that a lot of us don't really know how to read what we see.  What makes you think you are low on memory?  If it's the system information page, there are several memory measurements on there, and some of them being full is not a problem.

You need to read the logs to find out why things are failing.

Got it will check into that as well! Thanks for the guidance.
