We're getting a very strange issue across all of our Confluence projects. The page tree fails to load. Has anyone seen this or know how to resolve it by any chance?

Seems to be happening not just on my machine, though. Happens on Windows and macOS across the entire organization.
The error is generic:

Hi everyone,
Sorry to hear about the problems with the page tree loading. Our team took a closer look at this and found that a small number of sites were affected by this. However steps have been taking to resolve this and improve the performance here.
At this point the issue appears to have been resolved.
If you are still seeing this problem, then we certainly want to know about it. If you're on a free plan, you can post here to Community. However if you are a site-admin of a paid subscription, then please create a support case in regards to this problem by going to https://support.atlassian.com/contact/ These support cases are helpful for us to understand which users are affected when there is a degraded performance for a service like this.
Sorry for the inconvenience again, and thanks for reporting this behavior.
Andy
Hi Andy this error has just happened to our page. How can we get in contact with confluence to solve this? It has crippled our productivity today.

Hi @Emma Hermann,
I hope you're doing well. I'm Shannon from the Confluence Cloud support team. We want to take a look and see what the problem is. Can you raise a support ticket so we can access your site? A site admin can raise a ticket below:

Everything is operational according to Atlassian Status but as of this morning, I am now getting "Page tree failed to load" in Edge.
Refreshing/clearing browser cache does nothing.
Every day this software does something to limit my productivity.
Edit: Workaround provided by @Josephine Landgraf below (YMMV):
Edit: Atlassian's Confluence status page has finally caught up with the issue.
Edit: The issue has been resolved as of 01/08/22 @ 13:20 GMT - Page Tree view is working again.

Same for me this morning. However, the links to Confluence from Jira are all working. It is frustrating. Made a backup just in case!
This seems to be a reoccurring issue is it being being fixed?

@Tom Sharples I was able to raise a support ticket, maybe I was just lucky. I would suggest we all do the same, more people raise it as an issue, quicker we get a status update

Workaround:
1. Add a children display on your Overview page with enough level of depth.
2. Then, use the Ctrl+F to search for the page that you would like to access.

While waiting, another workaround for one of our spaces:

It's a decent workaround @Josephine Landgraf but needing one for basic functionality is frustrating. I am sick of having to work around issues in expensive enterprise software.

In the meantime, to make it work you can change the page view to another option different than Tree:

Same issue here. The ability of our company (50+ FTE) to work on our projects is affected by this issue on Atlassian side. Please can you fix it ASAP, pls?

@Melina Arias This doesn't "make it work".
None of the alternative views are a replacement for the default tree view. In Spaces with a lot of pages, they are unmanageable.
I appreciate you mean well but let's stop trying to find ways around Atlassian's broken stuff, putting up with substandard functionality, and apply pressure on them to actually fix the software we all pay for.

@Eliot Martin I wrote, "in the meantime..." - This is something that unblocked us while they fix it. I am sorry to hear it doesn't work for you.
Have a nice day!

@Melina Arias thanks a lot for this "workaround". We can use it now in the meantime until atlassian fixed the problem.. pretty annoying right know..

@Melina Arias Our spaces have far too many pages for those views to be meaningful. they create too much noise. The workaround from @Josephine Landgraf that re-creates an actual tree view on a page is more viable in my case.
But, as I keep saying, having to figure out workarounds for the software we pay thousands of dollars for is just nonsense. It would be great if the basic functionality was just reliable.
Every day I encounter show-stopping issues that are only addressed by community workarounds or hidden behind Atlassian marketplace paywalls. They even took Trello and made it worse.
If our company was so heavily invested in the Confluence/Jira stack I would migrate away in a heartbeat.

Hi Brant,
Thank you for escalating this! I can confirm there's an internal issue that was causing slowness in loading the page trees. We've since escalated the issue and are currently working to solve it.
We've requested a public update, so please keep an eye out for that.
Thanks again, and take care!

@Shannon S I have this issue today. I see following error in the console log:

It was weird the way it happened to me. I am just getting my site up and users migrated. I've never had that happened logged in as myself (site admin), and then I logged in as one of my basic users to view some stuff and got the error. I was on the same computer..... same browser. Just logged in as a different user. No matter what space I went to I receive the page tree loading issue. Then I logged off and back on as the same user again and got it a few times and not other times. Logged off and back on as myself, and didn't get it at all. Very weird.

We are experiencing this issue today and it also happened last week on the 4th (Tuesday's....coincidence?)
We have a workaround of clicking "Pages" to view the Space's pages but lose the structure the Page Tree gives us, but can at least view content.
There is an active "Chrome 96" Editior incident on the status page but nothing related to the Page Tree. Is this effecting others today or every Tuesday too?

@Yuri Brigance Glad to hear that it is resolved. I checked the Atlassian status page and did not see anything that would have caused that issue. This is a good resource to use in the future to see if there are any service disruptions. https://status.atlassian.com/
