No smart link options available after inserting a link to a attachment

blck February 21, 2024

I copy a link address from a PDF file located in the page's attachments (or from the attachments of another page).

Pasting the link in a page results in a plain URL link, and that's it. There are no options available to change the appearance of the link.

Inserting, e.g., a link from youtube, the options are available:

Does this mean smart links do not work with files stored within Confluence?

The point is, I like to see the link as a card or even embedded (with thumb preview)

The only possibility to get a card or an embedded icon is to download the attachment and then added with a drag-and-drop to the page.

I truly hope there is a more brilliant workaround for this issue.

I highly appreciate all the suggestions.

Michael

Hi @blck

Hi - I hope that you are Doing good !!

Smart Links are mainly designed for linking to pages and blog posts rather than directly to attachments.
You may need to use other methods like dynamic linking for attachments in your Confluence pages

Play around with Attachment Macro that allows you to display a list of attachments on a Confluence page

Refer the link for more information - https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/attachments-macro-97911315.html

Happy to help any further !!

Thank you very much and have a fantastic day!
Warm regards

Hi

Thanks for the fast response. I understand what you are writing, and of course, this is the correct answer, but this is not what's required.

I like to place media links at certain locations on a page. I like to have the links at a page position where the media stands in context to the content, and I do not require just an attachment list(of course, I know the attachment macro)

Currently, the solution looks like this: I have to store media I like within the page content, either outside the Confluence platform or I have to place it once by dragging and dropping it from an outside source.

Considering the media is already stored as an attachment, I'll have to download it and then place it with drag and drop on the page.

Actually, I do not see any practical reason why there is a difference in functionality depending on where the media file is stored.

BTW: it is very confusing for a user when there is sometimes a Smart Link and sometimes not. The least I would expect is a kind of message like: "There was no Smart Link created because the source is located on the Confluence platform."

Kind regards

Michael

@blck This is a known issue in Confluence (the ability to reuse attachments already on a page). You can vote for and watch the progress on this ticket: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFCLOUD-65344.
